Revitalising History at La Retraite Girls’ School, Clapham
In the historic neighbourhood of Clapham, the esteemed La Retraite Girls’ School has long stood as a beacon of education since its doors first opened in 1880. Tasked with the delicate job of updating the school’s aged windows, the administration embarked on a renovation journey. Their goal was clear: replace the old with new while keeping the school’s historic charm intact. The project focused on installing heritage sash windows, arched sash windows, and notably, large arched casement windows. Each new window was carefully crafted to mirror the originals, using 12mm thick double-glazed units. These units were not just replicas; they brought the added benefits of modern window technology, like better insulation and energy efficiency, all while maintaining the aesthetic of the past with Georgian glazing bars and true-to-era arches.
Overcoming Challenges with Care
One of the standout challenges was fitting the large arched casement windows. Their 3.5-metre width was too large for standard treatments. The school worked closely with Todi & Boys to tailor the approach, ensuring these significant pieces were handled with precision. The installation process was meticulously planned, ensuring each window was perfectly set to align with the historical look of the building.
